Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary

Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary is a conservation centre set in rainforest within the Western Area Peninsula National Park, in the hills above Freetown. It was established in the mid-1990s to rescue and rehabilitate orphaned western chimpanzees, a critically endangered subspecies.

The sanctuary cares for chimpanzees confiscated from the illegal pet and bushmeat trades, and it runs education and habitat-protection programmes with neighbouring communities.

Visitors can join scheduled guided tours to learn about the animals and the sanctuary's work, and eco-lodges on site allow overnight stays. Tours are run at set times and usually need to be booked in advance.
